Early Life –

• Mohammad Dabir Khan, his father Nazir Khan and grandfather Wazir Khan were descendants of the famous 18th-century veena player Niyamat Khan, who is said to have descended from Tansen’s daughter Saraswati and veena player Naubat Khan or Mishri Singh.
• Dabir Khan was the last veena player of the Rampur Seni tradition. His father Nazir Khan (Pyare Sahib) died at a young age and Dabir Khan was trained by his grandfather Wazir Khan and also by his uncle Sagir Khan.
• In his family tradition, Dabir Khan also sang Dhrupad and learned many vocal compositions from the Seni tradition.

Career –

• Dabir Khan learned Veena from his grandfather Wazir Khan. He was working in All India Radio Calcutta. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1969.
• He lived in Calcutta for many years where he trained many students.
• Among the disciples of Dabir Khan, K.C. Dey, Pandit Santosh Banerjee (former Head of the Department of Instrumental Music, Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta), Asit Dey (Head of the Theory Division of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata) and noted singer Manna Dey.
