Hafiz Ali Khan Biography In English

Hafiz Ali Khan (1888–1972) was an Indian sarod player. A fifth-generation scion of the Bangash gharana (school or style) of sarod players, Hafiz Ali was known for the lyrical beauty of his music and the crystal-clear tone of his strokes.

Early life –

  • A son of sarod player Nanneh Khan, Hafiz Ali grew up in a community of sarod players, and it is likely that he studied with his father and his close disciples.
  • He later received education from his cousin Abdullah Khan, nephew Mohammad Amir Khan and finally the beggar Wazir Khan of Rampur.
  • Wazir Khan is believed to have been a direct descendant of the legendary Tansen through the latter’s daughter’s lineage. Notably, Alauddin Khan of Maihar was also a disciple of Wazir Khan at Rampur during the same period.
  • It states that Hafiz Ali later studied Dhrupad and Thumri with Ganeshilal Choubey in Mathura and Bhaiya Ganpatrao respectively.

Career –

  • Hafiz Ali’s regal presence and electrifying charisma made him one of the most sought-after musicians of his time, no easy feat for an instrumentalist in an era dominated by vocal music.
  • Old-timers who have seen him in concert recall his stage presence and musicality with reverence.
  • While still a court musician at Gwalior, he made several trips to Bengal, where he performed at major music festivals, and taught many disciples.
  • Khan’s music found generous patrons in two Bengali nobles, Raichand Boral and Manmatha Ghosh, both of whom studied with him at various points.
  • Hafiz Ali Khan was also admired in the viceregal firmament of colonial India for his unique, stylized renditions of “God Save the King” on his sarod.

Legacy

  • Hafiz Ali died in New Delhi in 1972 at the age of 84. A road named after him was inaugurated by Chief Minister Smt.
  • Sheila Dikshit on PWD Road on 10 February. This is the second entry road to Nizamuddin Railway Station.
  • This is the only street in the capital city named after Tansen and Tyagaraja after an artist. This road is about 300 meters long.
