- Nirmala Rajasekhar began her training in Saraswati Veena at the age of 6 with Sri Deva Kottai Narayana Iyengar and Mrs. Kamala Ashwathama in Chennai.
- Rajshekhar was succeeded by violinist Shri A.D. Zakaria and Veena. Also received guidance from Shri S Balachander.
- Rajasekhar started his career as a solo artist at the age of 13. On his return to Chennai, Rajasekhar came under the tutelage of Saraswati veena player Smt.

- Nirmala Rajasekhar has been performing and composing for over forty years. In his career, Rajasekhar performs traditional Carnatic as a Saraswati veena player and creates contemporary compositions through compositions and collaborations.
- In 2020, Rajasekhar was the University of Wisconsin-River Falls’ annual commissioned composer, the longest-running program of its kind in the United States.
- In 2007, Rajasekhar’s album Songs of the Veena was released by Innova Recordings, and in 2010, Innova released his album Into the Raga.
- Rajasekhar’s third album with Innova, a collaborative world music album called Mythri: The Music of Friendship, was released in 2018.
