Early Life –
- Pandit Gopal Krishna Sharma was the proponent of Vichitra Veena, an ancient Indian musical instrument. Gopal Krishna’s early education in music was given by his father Pandit Nand Kishore, himself a famous Surbahar player, singer and student of Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar.
- After his father’s death, Gopal Krishna continued his training in music under the guidance of Pandit.
- He joined All India Radio (AIR) in 1949 and later became an accomplished artiste there.
Skills and style-
- Gopal Krishna was a versatile musician who had the ability to play tabla, guitar and folk instruments called ektara.
- Apart from his musical skills, Gopal Krishna was also a good singer. Gopal Krishna was an expert in playing ragas in its pure form and was proficient in Dhrupad style, Aalap, Jod and Jhala.
- His compositions were unique for Dhamar as well as other rhythmic patterns. His Jhala playing was a myriad of different patterns of rhythm and a mixture of the strokes of the mijraab. This often led to a crescendo that produced a trance-like climax before the conclusion of his singing.
- He created many new ragas, the most prominent of which are Shiv Omkar, Tilak Malhar and Saraswati Sarang. He composed several orchestral compositions for Akashvani including Tar Nritya.
- Gopal Krishnan was considered a strict guru. His lessons to his disciples often focused on ensuring the purity of the raga and the melodic patterns of the rhythm.
