Early life –
- Narendra Sharma was born on 21 September 1924 in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.
- He ran away from home at an early age to enroll at the Uday Shankar India Cultural Center in Almora, where he was mentored by Uday Shankar and Zohra Sehgal. He was initially denied entry due to his young age.
Career-
- Sharma’s first job was given to her by impresario Haren Ghosh in Kolkata to be part of a dance troupe that traveled to entertain Indian soldiers stationed in Iran and Iraq fighting for the British Army during World War II.
- He then moved to Bombay, where he came under the influence of the Indian People’s Theater Association.
- His early experiments in choreography were in collaboration with Uday Shankar’s nephew Sachin Shankar. He also choreographed song and dance sequences for commercial films in Mumbai.
- In 1954, he moved to Delhi and began his long association with the Modern School, New Delhi, as a full-time dance teacher.
- During the early years in Delhi in 1957, Sharma was the first choreographer of Ramlila of Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra.
- From 1961 to 66, he joined the SBKK to refurbish the Ramlila into a large-scale tamasha.
- In the late 1960s, she taught dance for two summers at the University of Washington. In 1972, she founded Bhumika, an independent dance group.
- In the 1980s he choreographed several major public performances
- After his retirement from the Modern School in 1986, Sharma continued to train students and stage dance productions, and remained active as a dancer even into his late seventies.
