- Sharma was born on 13 January 1938 in Jammu, in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, British India. His father Uma Dutt Sharma was a singer and able player.
- When he was just five years old, his father started teaching him vocal and able. He observed styles integrating Sufi notes with traditional Kashmiri folk music and asked his son to play the instrument which was new to Indian classical music at the time.
- Sharma started learning Santoor at the age of thirteen and gave his first public performance in Mumbai in 1955.

- Sharma is married to Manorama and has a son. His son Rahul, who started learning at the age of 13, is also a santoor player, and they have performed together since 1996.

- Sharma, who started his career playing the santoor with his father, is credited with introducing the santoor as a popular Indian classical musical instrument.
- He recorded his first solo album in 1960. Sharma took up the Santoor as an Indian classical musical instrument played at various music venues.
- Sharma composed the background music for a scene in V. Shantaram’s film Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), where Gopi Krishna performed a Kathak dance.
- Additionally, he collaborated with Chaurasia to compose music for several Hindi films, starting with Silsila (1981).
