Introduction
- Mairam is a membranophone percussion instrument from South India. It is held in a wooden cylinder with two skin heads on each side, tensioned with skin laces, resembling a rustic mridangam.
- It is played with the hands with the drum in a horizontal position and is used in folk and temple music. Maram signifies ‘tree’ in South Indian languages.
Construction –
- Maram is a tabla instrument made of leather and black paste. The maram consists of a cylindrical barrel covered with leather at both ends and tied with leather straps.
- An instrument of the same name and similar in all respects except for a face well smeared with black paste by the Paraya community for certain dances associated with V Puja. It is also called Mathalam by them and it produces a tone similar to Maddalam.
Use
- It is mainly used for temple rituals known as Pani Kottal.
