Introduction
- Murasu is a type of drum that originated many centuries ago in Tamil Nadu, India.
Types Of Murasu
- There are three types of Murasu –
- Vira Murasu (martial drum), a kettle drum used for military purposes. It can be placed on a raised platform called Murasu Kattil.
- Tyaga Murasu (charity drum), a drum used when giving gifts, also used to invite poor people to receive goods.
- Nyaya Murasu (judgment drum), a drum used to summon people to judicial proceedings or to present their grievances requiring adjudication.
Construction
- Murasu is a percussion instrument made of wood, bullock skin and elephant skin. Murasu is said to have been made of black wood with leather straps fastened together.
- The face of the instrument is covered with the skin of a dead bull without hair removed or the skin of a female elephant that conquered a tiger.
- It is further anointed with black soil and has a black spot or “eye”. The instrument is struck with wooden sticks.
