Khayal In Music In English

Khayal

– This is a Persian language word. It literally means imagination.

• That type of song in which the singer expresses his feelings with the tabla by using various rhetoric like Alaap, Taan, Boltan, Khatka, Murki, Sargam etc., while protecting the rules of the raga, then Khayal is composed.

• Special attention is paid to both the stability and agility of vocals in Khayal and the use of Gamak is reduced in Khayal, its use is a shadow of Dhrupad-Dhamar singing.

• In khayal, the emphasis is not on lyricism like Dhrupad, but special emphasis is given on vocal miracles and vocal beauty. Therefore, in khayal, the place of rhythm and tala is secondary to that of swara. It has the predominance of shringaar Rash.

• There are two types of khayal, Vilambit khayaal or bada khayaals and drut or chota khayals.

Vilambit or Bada Khayal

It is sung in Vilamit rhythm, probably that is why it came to be called Vilambit or Bada Khayal.

Tabla is used with it, so Ektal, Tilwara, Jhumra, Jhaptal, Aada Chartal etc. Tabla’s rhythms are played with it. In Bade Khayal, the words are very few and the song has only two parts – sthayi and antara. The mouth is mostly of two to five quantities.

• Some musicians chant in detail before the big khayal. After uttering the sthaai antara of the khyal, again speak the face of the sthaai and increase the vowels according to the rules of the raga.

• The alap is decorated with instruments like particle, khatka, meend etc. After making the alap of the edge, the bahlawa, equal taan, dun or quadru ki taan, boltan, speech with rhythm, sargam taan, etc. are spoken.

• There are many opinions of scholars about the inventor of the big idea. According to some opinion, in the fifteenth century, Sultan Husain Sharqi of Jaunpur invented and propagated Bade Khayal. Some scholars oppose this view and say that the court singers of Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah ‘Rangile’ Nyamat Khan and Naubat Khan, who are famous in the music world as Sadrang and Adarang respectively, composed the first Khayal.

• Sadarang and Adarang composed many khayals and propagated khayal by teaching their disciples, but they themselves used to sing dhrupad and not khayal. From this it is understood that Dhrupad singing had a prestige at that time and Khayal was considered to be of inferior quality.

• Muhammad Shah was a great lover of music and composed Khayal himself. After Sadrang, Adarang, Harrang, Dilrang and Kunwar Shyam etc. composed Khayal and contributed a lot in its promotion.

Drut or Chota Khayal –

It is clear from the name itself that its rhythm is faster than big Khayal. It is said that in the fourteenth century Amir Khusrau first composed Chhota Khayal on the basis of Qawwali.

• These khayals are generally sung in three taal, jhaptal and ektal.

• The sequence of songs of both Chhote Khayal and Bade Khayal is almost the same, only the nature and rhythm are different.

• Like big khayals in small khayals, alaap, bol alaap, bahlava, different types of taunts, sargams, particles, mean, khatka, murki etc. are used.
