Dhrupad Music –

 Most scholars are of the opinion that it was composed by Raja Mansingh Tomar of Gwalior in the fifteenth century.

• Raja Mansingh Tomar contributed a lot in the promotion of Dhrupad. During Akbar’s time Tansen and his guru Swami Haridas Dagur, Nayak Baiju and Gopal, etc., used to sing Dhrupad only.

• Dhrupad is a song of serious nature. In singing it, there is force in the throat and in the lungs. That’s why people call it a masculine song. Its prevalence was more in the medieval period and nowadays due to the change in public interest, it has been replaced by khayal.

• Most of the dhrupads have four parts –Sthaai antara, sanchari and aabhoga. Its words are mostly from Brajbhasha. In this, there is predominance of heroic, peace and makeup rasa.

• It is sung in talas like Chartaal, Sultaal, Brahmataal, Teewara Matta taal etc. Which is the rhythm of Pakhawaj.

• Dhrupad is accompanied by Pakhawaj such a serious instrument. Nom Tom is first elaborated in Dhrupad. Alaap also has four parts.

• Noam-tom’s alaap becomes rhythmic with its third organ and its speed is gradually increased. From this place the use of Gamak starts.

• In the dhrupad, tactile vowel groups like khatke or taan are not taken, but Meand and Gamak are used more.

• After the alaap, the bandish of dhrupad is sung and various types of lyakriyas are performed. In Dhrupad, the lyakaris have got different places.

• Let’s expand the lyricism with less emphasis on the lyrics and more on the lyrics, creating different lyrics.

• The one who sang Dhrupad in ancient times is called Kalavant. Nowadays, the bandish of the song is spoken in various lyakaris. In ancient times, there were four main styles of Dhrupad called Bani. There were four Banias – Khandar, Nauhar, Dagur and Gobarhar.
