Early Life –

  • Arnab Chakraborty is an Indian classical musician and sarod player. Arnab Chakraborty grew up in Mumbai, where his father was a chemistry professor at the Indian Institute of Technology.
  • His tutelage began under sarod maestro Brij Narayan, a disciple of his father, Sarangi Pandit Ram Narayan, and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan of the Senia Maihar gharana. Arnab later took training from Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta of Shahjahanpur Gharana.
  • Arnab studied ethnography and international relations at Hampshire College as a scholarship student, graduating in 2002.
  • This experience exposed him to other musical traditions, and inspired him to experiment with new ideas in sarod construction and design as well as musical idioms.

Career –

  • Many important concerts of Arnab have taken place. She made her solo debut in 1994, and won the National Collegiate Competition for Music and Dance for three consecutive years between 1995 and 1997.
  • In 1999 he performed before then-UN Secretary-General Dr. Kofi Annan at a memorial event for Pakistani peace activist Iqbal Ahmed.
  • Despite being able to play the sarod loud and clear himself, Chakraborty believes that a large part of current Indian instrumental music sacrifices aesthetic qualities in favor of raw speed and loud amplification.
  • For this reason, he makes a conscious effort to subordinate his virtuosity to the demands of the music he plays.

Protection And Impact-

  • Arnab’s early training took place in the Maihar and Shahjahanpur schools, both of which emerged from the Seniya school of thought founded by the great Miyan Tansen.
  • Chakraborty has continued an extended period of part-patronage-part-collaboration with Vinayak Chittar of this gharana. He has also studied with many singers of Agra and Gwalior Gharana, notably Yashwantbuah Joshi.
  • Until Mukherjee’s death in March 2010, Chakraborty had taken up training under Guru Kalyan Mukherjee of the Shahjahanpur Gharana. He has received several dozen traditional Sarod compositions from the Guru of Lucknow-Shahjahanpur Gharana, Ustad Irfan Muhammad Khan.
