Important notes-

  • It is clear from the name itself that it is a variant of Raag Todi. There are two views of the musican about its creation- according to the first opinion, it originated in Gujarat, hence it was named Gurjari Todi. According to another belief, this raag was composed by Gujri queen Mrugayani of Raja Mansingh Tomar of Gwalior.
  • This is a Raag of a serious nature. It is practiced in all the three octaves. Being Uttara Ga predominant, it should be practiced in Madhya and Tar Saptaks, but it is practiced in all the three Saptaks. Some old restrictions are found only in Uttaranchal.
  • Gurjari todi and Miyan ki todi, from the point of view of tone only the difference of fifth is visible, but still there is a lot of difference between both. Gurjari’s Rishabh is more important than Todi’s. Taking Gandhar in this, they increase Rishabh.
  • Similarly, taking Nishad in Uttara Ga increases Dhaivat. For example, look at Aalap. In this Rishabha and Dhaivat are more important than Gandhara and Nishad respectively. Some people consider Gujri Todi to be Gurjari Todi by omitting only the fifth syllable in Ga Todi, but this is wrong.
  • This is an ancient Raag, but the form of ancient texts is completely different from today’s form.

Nyas ke swar- Sa, Re(k), Ga and Dha(k)।
