- In 1297, Alauddin Khilji attacked and conquered the Devagiri state. Khilji asked Gopal Nayak to recite his singing. Gopal Nayak kept reciting his singing for 6 days. Taking orders from Amir Khusro Alauddin, sitting under the throne kept listening to his singing.
- After this, when Khusro appeared in front, Gopal Nayak invited him for music. Khusro quickly got ready and asked Gopal to start singing. Gopal started singing. But in the middle, Khusras stopped them and said that this is not an original raga.
- That’s why Gopal said, well you recite the original melody. At the same time, Khusro composed a Persian raga similar to it and started singing, so Gopal was forced to give up. In this way he defeated Gopal with his trickery.
- Amir Khusro understood the real talent of Gopal Nayak very well, so he took him with him to Delhi. Gopal Nayak stayed with Amir Khusro till his death in Delhi.
- Gopal was a Brahmin by caste and used to sing Chand Prabandha. In his time Chhand Prabandhan was in publicity. Not Dhrupad.
