  • Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh often referred to as ‘Guru’ Gyan Prakash Ghosh was an Indian harmonium and tabla player of the Farrukhabad gharana of Hindustani classical music and musician.

Early life and background

  • Born in Kolkata to a Hindu family with a musical background, he was the grandson of Dwarkanath Ghosh, who founded Dwarkin in 1875 and invented the “Dwarkin Harmonium”, popular in West Bengal, India.
  • He graduated from the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta. He was keen on sports.
  • He also practiced painting, but had to stop painting due to an eye injury in a soccer match.
  • Then he turned to music. She was trained in singing by Girija Shankar, Mohd. Sagir Khan and Mohd. Dabir Khan.
  • He learned tabla from Masit Khan of the Farrukhabad gharana and became his senior disciple.

Career-

  • He was the founder of the Sourav Sangeet Academy and was closely associated with the ‘Sangeet Anusandhan Academy’.
  • He composed music for several Bengali films, among which Jadubhatt, Andhare Alo and Rajalakshmi O Srikanth are notable.
  • He has composed and directed music for many popular gramophone records sung by various artistes.
  • He also provided the music for the Academy Award nominated animated short The Bead Game directed by Ishu Patel for the National Film Board of Canada.
  • His students include tabla players Kanai Dutta, Shyamal Bose, Shankar Ghosh, Anindo Chatterjee, and Nikhil Ghosh, Rajkumar Mishra, singers Prasun Banerjee, Ajoy Chakraborty, Suman Ghosh and Arun Bhaduri.
