• Chatur Lal was the first Indian percussionist who brought the Indian drum ‘Tabla’ to the West in 1955 with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and again in 1956-57 with Pandit Ravi Shankar etc.
• He was also the first Indian musician whose tabla solo LP was released in both the East and the West. A German disciple of Dr. Heimo Rau, the then director of the Max Müller Bhawan, called him ‘the incarnation of the God of Music’ who opened up to the listener a fourth dimension of experience beyond time and space.

Early Life –

• Chatur Lal was an Indian tabla player. Chatur Lal was born on 16 April 1925 in Udaipur, Rajasthan. His younger brother Ram Narayan was a prominent sarangi player in the latter half of the 20th century.

Career-

• In 1947, Chatur Lal came to Delhi and joined All India Radio. From 1948 onwards he regularly participated in events and conferences throughout India and abroad.
• He toured with Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Banerjee, Baba Alauddin Khan, Sharan Rani and Ali Akbar Khan in the 1950s and early 1960s and helped popularize the tabla in the West and created the nuances of this Indian drum.
• He was the first internationally acclaimed percussionist to introduce Indian classical music to the West along with Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in the mid-1950s, when he was toured throughout Europe via the Museum of Modern Art, Rockefeller Center, and the Omnibus. And was invited to perform in America.
