- Pandit Shankar Ghosh was an Indian tabla player of the Farrukhabad gharana of Hindustani classical music. He has revolutionized both the art of tabla solo playing and tabla accompaniment. Many of his compositions have become an intrinsic part of contemporary tabla repertoire.

Early Life And Training-
- He began training under Gyan Prakash Ghosh of Calcutta in 1953, who pioneered the concept of tabla ensemble, employing multiple tabla players playing the same piece; This tradition was later carried forward by Shankar himself.
- He was married to Hindustani classical singer Sanjukta Ghosh of the Patiala Gharana, and was the father of tabla player Bikram Ghosh, whom he also trained in tabla, and who performed with Ali Akbar Khan.
Career–
- He began touring the US in the 1960s with sarod maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan to great acclaim, and over the years he toured with Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee, Sharan Rani.
- During his stay abroad, he also worked with artists like Greg Ellis, Pete Lockett and John Bergamo.
- He has received awards such as ITC Sangeet Research Academy Award and Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Award. Teaching tabla for over three decades, he has taught at institutes in Kinkata, Paris and Bonn.
- During his 10-year stay at the Ali Akbar College of Music in California, he collaborated with Western classical and fusion giants and made a tremendous impact across the world.
- He is the leader of the all-drum orchestra, “Music of the Drums”, which was staged at London’s Royal Albert Hall for the closing ceremony of ASIAD’82 and the 100th year celebrations of the BBC PROMS.
