Early Life –
- Raja Chhatrapati Singh, born in the year 1919, came from the famous dynasty of Bijna State.
- Raja Mukund Singh ji his great grandfather and Raja Himmat Singh ji his father were great connoisseurs of Indian classical music and were patronizing famous artists of their time and appointing them as court musicians.
Career-
- Raja Chhatrapati Singh went a step further and started taking interest in Pakhawaj himself.
- During a pilgrimage with his father he met Swami Ramdasji in Ayodhya who was a great Pakhawaj exponent
- Raja Chhatrapati Singh decided to become his student and take tuition on this instrument.
- He was simply fascinated and that too at a young age of ten-twelve years. His Guru Swami Ramdasji was a disciple of Shri Madan Mohanji who was a disciple of the great Pakhawaj player Shri Kudausinhji.
- Mr. Kudau Singhji was a very famous Pakhawaj exponent of his time.
- In 1951, Pandit Omkarnath Thakur awarded him the title of ‘Professor of Pakhawaj’ from Banaras Hindu University.
- He was a top class artist of All India Radio. He was also honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
- His daughter Chandra Singh is a talented sitar player and his son Raja Surya Pratap Singh also plays sitar and often accompanies his father during his concerts.
- He has developed a new taal combination known as ‘Chaturanga’, which consists of 4 taals-
- ‘Vedang’ which consists of 6 beats
- “Tal Sagar” consists of 7 pools
- Taal Mala consisting of 108 Taals
- 108 ragas have lehras.
- Usually it takes 24 hours to complete the whole ‘Tala Mala’ but it can be completed in 12 or even 6 hours.
- He was accompanied by some great maestros like Ustad Rahimuddin Dagar, Senior Dagar Brothers, Pandit Ramchatur Mallick and others.
- He taught and performed at the University of Washington School of Music during 1975–76.
- Apart from music, he was also very fond of chess. He wrote a large volume on chess named ‘Ashwa Nirupan Granth’ in which he showed five thousand different moves of the knight.
