Important Notes

  • It is clear from the name itself that this Raag is a type of Todi. It is said that this Raag was composed by Tansen’s son Bilas Khan, after whose name this Raag was named. There is such a legend that after Tansen, Bilas Khan had made Tansen alive for a while by singing this raag. Since that time the popularity of this raag increased.
  • The combination of Dha(k)Ma and Re(k).Ni(k) is shown again and again in this Raag.
  • This is a Raag of serious nature. It is more suitable for late thought and high office bearer.
  • Its smell is very mild. Repeated use of Re(k) Ga(k) Re(k) Ga(k) Re(k) Sa makes Gandhara itself very komal.
  • Nishad is short in its aaroh. When moving up from Gandhar, the strings of Dhaivat Par reach directly from Dhaivat to Sa Par Pa by taking particles of Nishad like-
  • Ga(k)Pa, Ni(k)Dha(k)- Sa, but mostly Nishads with Sa, use Ga in both the octaves like- Ni(k)Sa Re(k) Ga -Re (k)Sa
  • From the point of view of singing time and plain speaking, it is a Uttara Ga predominant raag, yet its trend is Purva Ga predominant.
  • The swars of this raag are of Bhairavi, but the movement is broken, that is why it is considered to be born of Bhairavi Thaat and NaMa Vilaskhani Todi Rakkha Gaya, not Vilaskhani Bhairavi.

Nyas swar– Ga(k), Pa and Dha(k)।
