  • Ustad Allarakha Khan Qureshi was born in Ghagwal village Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir.
  • His mother tongue was Dogri and his family was Muslim Dogra, although most of the Dogra clans around him were Hindu.
  • Growing up on a farm, Ustad Allarakha was always influenced by music, admiring the traveling musicians he occasionally had the opportunity to see.
  • His father, at that time, looked down upon his boy learning to sing or play a musical instrument as a profession, because of the family’s origins as Dogras of Jammu.
  • At the age of 12, Ustad Alla Rakha ran away from home to live with his uncle in the nearby city of Gurdaspur to pursue his passion for music.
  • With little chance for grooming and appreciation, the determined young lad ran away from home, began his training in tabla with Mian Kader Baksh of the Punjab gharana of tabla players.
  • Mian Qadir Baksh, who had no sons, formally adopted Allah Rakha and called him the next head of the Punjab gharana of tabla players.
  • He was married to his cousin Bavi Begum.
  • Their marriage produced three sons, Zakir Hussain, Fazal Qureshi and Taufiq Qureshi; two daughters, Khurshid Aulia née Qureshi and Razia; and nine grandchildren.
  • They all escape him except Razia; This was the news of his death a day before what is believed to be the cause of his fatal heart attack.

Career-

  • Ustad Allarakha Qureshi started his career as an accompanist in Lahore and then in 1936 as an employee of All India Radio, Delhi.
  • but later moved to Bombay in 1940, played the station’s first tabla solo and raised the instrument’s status in the process.
  • Soon after, he also started composing music for Hindi films under the name AR Qureshi.
  • He composed for a total of 23 films between 1943 and 1964.

  • His famous and spellbinding performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 served to introduce classical Indian music to general Western audiences.
