Early Life –
- Vikas was born in 1957 in Varanasi in a family of musicians. He was instructed on sarod by Rajesh Chandra Moitra of the Indian classical Maihar Gharana school. His formal schooling was completed by the teachings of his family including his uncle Kishan Maharaj.
Music –
- Vikash performs Indian classical music, jazz and the crossover between Indian music and jazz.
- He visits and participates in international crossover festivals like WOMAD, Diwali Festival in New Zealand or International Leprosy Eradication Festival. During the California tour, Vikas Maharaj was accompanied by his son and tabla player Prabhash Maharaj.
- Initiated by German music journalist and author Joachim-Ernst Berndt, Vikas participated in the crossover jazz record “Raga” in 1996.
- In the second collaboration with Babelar, Vikas Maharaj and his son Prabhash contributed to the crossover album “Point of View”.
- “Point of View” was a composition commissioned by the International Bachakademie Stuttgart and premiered in Stuttgart in 2001.
