Early Life –
- Rajeev Taranath is an Indian classical musician who plays the sarod. Taranath Ali is a disciple of Akbar Khan.
- Rajeev Taranath was born on 17 October 1932 in Bangalore. He received his initial training in vocal music from his father Pandit Taranath. He gave his first public singing performance when he was nine years old. Before the age of twenty, Rajiv was singing for All India Radio.
- Although Rajeev had a PhD in Literature, he decided to leave his career as Professor and Head of English Literature at the Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli, later moved to National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli and then to Calcutta, where he Started his musical training under the tutelage of Ali Akbar Khan.
Career –
- Rajiv continued to learn from his guru until Khan’s death in 2009. He has also received guidance from Ravi Shankar, Annapurna Devi, Nikhil Banerjee and Ashish Khan.
- He is respected for his deep understanding as he highlights the raga, the quality of the vocal and the power of his strokes. His distinctive style reflects technical excellence, imaginative power and emotional range.
- He has also served as the head of the Indian Music Program in the Department of World Music at the California Institute of the Arts from 1995 to 2005.
- He currently lives and teaches in Mysore, Karnataka. Rajiv Taranth taught English literature at the University of Aden in the 1980s. He was the subject of a documentary titled “Fannan Min-al-Hind” (Artists of India) for television in Aden.
