  • Ustad Ahmad Jan Khan “Thirkwa” was an Indian tabla player, generally regarded as the pre-eminent soloist among 20th-century tabla players, and the most influential tabla player in the history of Indian classical music.
  • Khan Sahib Ahmed Jaan used to play so well since childhood that he was given the title of ‘Thirku’ by Ustad Abdul Aziz Khan of Patiala.
  • This title became so popular that it got associated with your name. Sometimes people used to address you only by saying ‘Thirkuva’ sir.

Early Life –

  • Ahmed Jaan, later known as ‘Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa’, was born in 1892 in Moradabad, North-Western Provinces of British India, into a family of musicians.
  • Although his early musical training was in Hindustani vocal and sarangi, he became interested in tabla when he first heard tabla player Munir Khan.
  • He became a disciple of Munir Khan at the age of 12.
  • On very rare occasions, he presented restrictions to his voice, but this was only in the company of very close compatriots and admirers.

Career –

  • According to an article in The Hindu newspaper, “When he was 12 years old, Ahmad Jaan was brought to Bombay by his father Hussain Baksh and elder brother Miya Jaan, both renowned sarangi players, and placed under the tutelage of tabla maestro Ustad Munir Khan.” .
  • The patronage was to last for 25 years, but at a very early stage, his mentor’s father, Kale Khan, nicknamed him “Thirkawa” because of his playful and mischievous nature.
  • For a long time, he played tabla in the court of the Nawab of Rampur and during this time, came in close contact with the masters of the Agra, Jaipur, Gwalior and Patiala gharanas – both singers and instrumentalists.
  • In popular jargon, Ahmed Jan Thirakwa is referred to as “the Mount Everest of tabla”.
  • He performed at regular intervals in almost all music conferences in different parts of the country and gained popularity as well as acclaim.
