Margi Sangeet & Deshi Sangeet in Music English Notes –  

Margi Sangeet Or Gandharva Sangeet  –

The music which was used by the Gandharva people in time immemorial and whose purpose was to attain salvation is called Sangeet Margi or Gandharva Sangeet. It is said that God Brahma first taught Margi music to Bharata and Bharata to Gandharvas.

This music was supposed to show the way to salvation, hence it is called Margi Sangeet.

Gandharva people used it, hence it is also known as Gandharva Sangeet.

Features of Margi Sangeet –

(1) Margi Sangeet was based on words.

(2) The rules of Margi Sangeet were strict and it was mandatory to follow it.

(3) The Margi sangeet cannot be changed.

(4) Margi Sangeet was the music showing the way to salvation.

(5) Margi Sangeet is believed to be created by God and it was composed by Brahma ji.

(6) Now Margi music is not in used, neither are Gandharva, this music has disappeared.

Deshi Sangeet Or Gaan –

The music which was produced by the musicians through their intelligence and whose purpose was folk entertainment was called Deshi music or gaan.

Even during the time of Pandit Sharangdev,  Deshi music was promoted everywhere. Today the Hindustani music which is prevalent here is completely different from the Deshi music which was prevalent in the Sharangdev period. Deshi music is variable. It is unanimous. Because it is always for public entertainment, it is based on public interest, this is accepted by all.
