Introduction
- Tayambak is a tabla instrument made of wood, cloth and leather. This temple instrument is found in Kerala. A two-headed drum, it is played with other instruments.
- A temple instrument, the Tayambaka is a two-headed drum. While playing there is a stick in only one hand and no stick is used in the other hand.
- The speed of the instrument starts at a slow speed, eventually reaching medium and high speed. Apart from the temple, this percussion instrument is also played on the front stages, open grounds or pageant grounds.
Use
- Although thayambaka is mostly used in orchestral performances, it is also used as a solo instrument. It can also be performed in a pair which is called double thayambaka.
- If three players perform together it is called triple thayambak. Also, if five players perform in a row together then it is called Pancha Thayambak. The pattern in which the player plays the instrument gives scope for considerable manodharma (improvisation).
