Introduction

  • Tasha is a tabla instrument made of wood, metal, brass, leather, cloth and parchment. It is a folk instrument, mainly found in Jammu and Kashmir and various parts of North India.

Construction

  • A shallow metal bowl with a burnished face. Used as a secondary drum in ensembles paired with a larger drum.
  • Jodi, jointly called Naqqara, forms an important part of Naubat. An ancient musical instrument, the nakkara is about 2-3 feet tall.
  • Its shape is similar to the Bayan of Tabla. Its body is bowl shaped. Its face is made of leather, which is tightly fitted with rajju (cloth strips).
  • Percussion instrument played with the help of two sticks. It is also played with hands in some parts of North India. Other percussion instruments like Bheri and Dundubhi are different types of Nakkara.

Tasha in Jammu and Kashmir

  • There is a shallow pot of clay. The wide opening is covered with skin, tightened by a leather tape through a hoop at the bottom, hung from the neck and beaten with two sticks while playing.
