Early Life-

  • Shubha Mudgal was born in 1959 in Allahabad to Skanda Gupta and Jaya Gupta in an academic family who pursued Hindustani classical music and Kathak along with literature.
  • As a young girl she began learning Kathak in Allahabad, following her sister’s footsteps.
  • Later he turned to Hindustani classical music and his first traditional teacher was Pandit Ramashray Jha in Allahabad. Later, Shubha Mudgal moved to New Delhi, and continued her musical education under Pandit Vinay Chandra Mudgalya and Pandit Vasant Thakar.

Personal Life –

  • Shortly after graduating from Delhi University, she married Mukul Mudgal, son of her guru Vinay Chandra Moudgalya, in 1982.
  • Her husband, also an accomplished musician, decided not to take up music as a profession but became a lawyer and jurist. The marriage did not last. The Mudgal couple had a son named Dhaval Mudgal, who is a lead singer in the Delhi-based band Half Step Down. Later Shubha Mudgal married tabla player Anish Pradhan.

Career –

  • Shubha Mudgal began performing as a Hindustani classical singer in the 1980s and gained a certain reputation as a talented singer.
  • In the 1990s, he began experimenting with other forms of music, including pop and fusion varieties. His album ‘Ali More Angana’ was a big hit especially among the youth.
  • Apart from being an artist, Shubha Mudgal is also recognized as a musician. He did the soundtrack for Mira Nair’s film ‘Kama Sutra’ and also composed the score for Rajan Khosa’s ‘Dance of the Wind’.
  • He has composed for dancers like Aditi Mangaldas and Sonal Mansingh and for ballets like ‘Meera and Krishna Katha’ of “Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra”.
  • Shubha Mudgal composed and sang the title track of the Star Plus serial “Diya Aur Baati Hum” with Kailash Kher. This is a very soulful, classical-based Rajasthani folk song.
