Early Life –
- Gopalakrishna Bharati was born in 1810 AD in a Brahmin family at Narimanam near Nagappattinam district of Tamil Nadu. He spent his early days in Mudikondan village near Tiruvarur.
- After six years he moved to Anandatandavapuram village near Mayavaram. He received his basic education from his father Ramaswami. Both his father and grandfather were ‘Vina’ artistes.
- After losing his parents at an early age, he worked as a cuk in a temple. He then met Govinda Yeti, who taught him Hindu scriptures, and then musician Ramdas, who taught him Hindustani music.
Career-
- Gopalakrishna started his professional carir after finding a mentor named Annu Iyer.
- He composed many ‘kritis’ depicting many musical mysteries on the principles of ‘Advaita’. He is still famous for his various compositions, but is primarily famous for his enduring Tamil opera, known as ‘Nandanar Charithram’.
- He wrote many songs on Lord Nataraja of Chidambaram. He also wrote musical narratives about other ‘Saiva Nayanmars’ like ‘Iyarpakai Nayanar Charitram’, ‘Thirnilakantha Nayanar Charitram’ and ‘Karaikkal Amtanaiyar Charitram’. He also composed ‘Varugalamo’ (Manji), ‘Varuvaro’ (Sama) and ‘Ennermam’ (Devgandhari).
- Many of his students, including ‘Vedanayagam Pillai’, who was the District Munsiff in Mayuram, were taught many of his songs by Gopalakrishna. His songs became very popular and are also sung in many dances and songs nowadays.
