Early Life –
- Sathur AG. Subramaniam was born in Angarai, Tiruchirappalli to Ganesh Shastrigal and Thailammal.
- He spent his early years with his uncle in nearby Sathur in Virudhunagar district and was introduced to the devotional singing of “Bhajan Gosthi”.
- To pursue his passion for music he joined Annamalai University, Chidambaram, where he was trained by eminent maestros like Thiruvaiyaru Sabesa Iyer, Thanjavur Ponnaiah Pillai, Tiger Varadachariyar etc.
- He graduated with a “Sangeeta Bhushanam” degree in Music in 1936.
Career –
- With the blessings of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, he presented his first concert in 1937 at the Satguru Tyagaraja festival in Thiruvaiyaru.
- Sri Subramaniam had a brilliant voice (“Vengala Kural” in Tamil), called “Raavai Saarem”, and he could produce complex gamakas and brugas with clarity.
- Being fluent in multiple languages, his renditions had clear diction which brought out the meaning and emotional “bhaav” in the song.
- His “Bani” or “Pattanadhiram” was considered pure, authentic and strictly following tradition.
- His singing endeared him to many of his famous contemporaries like GNB, Madurai Mani Iyer and Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar.
- Inaugurating the Sri Rama Navami celebrations in Coimbatore was a privilege given only to the best singers. This privilege was given to AGS for many consecutive years.
- AGS was a very beloved Guru, who was affectionate towards all his disciples. His famous disciples were –
