Early Life-

  • Muthuswami Dikshitar was born on March 24, 1776, in a Brahmin family in Tiruvarur, near Thanjavur, now in the state of Tamil Nadu in India.
  • He was the eldest son of musician Ramaswami Dikshitar, who taught many subjects including Vedas, poetry, music and astronomy. Muthuswamy had two brothers, Chinnaswamy (Sinnaswamy) and Balaswamy (Balaswami), and a sister, Balamba.
  • Muthuswami’s father, Ramaswami Dikshitar, born in about 1735 into the Oottara Vadama family of Virinchipuram, had moved to the south due to the politically turbulent environment in Kanchipuram and around Virinchipuram at that time.
  • At the behest of local landlord Venkatakrishna Mudaliar, Muthuswami moved to Manali town near Madras (now Chennai).

Career–

  • According to legend, Murugan, the deity of the temple at Tirutani, placed a piece of sugar candy in Dikshitar’s mouth and ordered him to sing.
  • This marked the beginning of his career in music and he also adopted the Guruguha Mudra, one of the many names of Murugan. His first composition was Srinathadi Guruguho Jayati Jayati in raga Maya Malavagula and Aadi Taala.
  • The song addressed God (and/or Guru) in its first expression (vivhakti) in Sanskrit. Dikshitar later composed works in all eight forms of God.
  • He then went on a pilgrimage to visit and compose at the temples of Kanchi, Tiruvannamalai, Chidambaram, Tirupati and Kalahasti, Srirangam, before returning to Tiruvarur.
  • Muthuswami Dikshitar mastered the veena and the influence of veena playing is evident in his compositions, especially the gamakas.
