- Kudau Singh is remembered as one of the greatest winger players of India.
- Kudou Singh was born in 1815 in Banda, Uttar Pradesh. His father’s name was Gappa.
- When he was only nine years old, he lost his parents and said that he was wandering here and there.
- He learned various techniques of playing Pakhawaj from famous Mridang maestro Sridas and Bhagwan Singh.
- Kudau Singh was an ardent devotee of the Goddess and used to worship the Goddess before playing Pakhawaj.
- It is said that once in the princely state of Dholpur, when you were passing through the market, the king’s ride was passing by.
- The runner who was running ahead asked you to move away. You didn’t like the way he said it.
- You slapped him a couple of times, so the soldiers there put you in jail.
- You used to beat the wall day and night in the jail itself. After some days a Dhrupad singer came to that state.
- No player could play Pakhawaj with him. At last you were called and you shattered his pride. Since then you have been freed from jail.
Career –
- Kudou Singh introduced many complex and strong syllables, which require a lot of strength to play.
- He composed a number of ‘parans’ and most of them required twenty-four ‘tals’ (chakras) to complete one recital.
- In eventing, the back of the palm was used to deliver powerful strokes.
- He also presented his shows in different corners of India.
