Early Life And Training
- Born in the small village of Keri in a family in the Ponda taluka of North Goa, Goa, Kerkar moved to Kolhapur at the age of eight, where she studied for eight months.
- At the age of 16, she also came to Mumbai with her mother and uncle. Seth Vithaldas Dwarkadas, a wealthy local businessman, helped him study with Barkat Ullah Khan, a sitar player and court musician from Patiala state.
- During his visits to the city, he taught him intermittently for two years. However, when Khan became a court musician in the Mysore state, he trained for a short time under Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale and Ramakrishnabuwa Vaze.
- He eventually ended up as a disciple of Ustad Alladiya Khan, the founder of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana in 1921, and trained rigorously under him for the next eleven years.
Career –
- Performing regularly for elite audiences, Kerkar eventually achieved widespread fame.
- Kerkar was awarded the 1953 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, the highest Indian recognition given to practicing artistes.
- In his native village of Keri, Surashree Kesarbai Kerkar High School now stands on the site of Kerkar’s former second home, and the house in which he was born still stands less than a kilometer away.
- Unlike his guru, Kerkar was not fond of teaching, and so he taught only one disciple, Dhondutai Kulkarni, who had earlier learned from UT.
- Since 2000, several CDs of his archival recordings have been released, including one on the Golden Milestone series, which includes many of his best-known songs.
