- Girija Devi was born on 8 May 1929 in Varanasi to a landlord Ramdev Rai.
- Her father played harmonium and taught music, and Girija Devi took khayal and tappa singing lessons from singer and sarangi player Sarju Prasad Mishra from the age of five.
- He acted in the film Yaad Rahe at the age of nine and continued his studies under Chand Mishra in various genres.
Career –
- Girija Devi, after marrying a businessman in about 1946, made her public debut in 1949 on All India Radio Allahabad, but faced opposition from her mother and grandmother because it was traditionally believed that any A woman of upper class should not perform in public.
- Girija Devi sang in the Banaras Gharana and performed the distinctive Purbi Ang Thumri style of the tradition, whose status she helped raise.
- Her repertoire included the semi-classical styles Kajri, Chaiti and Holi and she sang Khayal, Indian folk music and Tappa.
