Brief description of Gharanas of Tabla –

The tabla was born in Delhi by dividing the mridang in two parts and in the history of music, Siddhar Khan is considered the first tabla-maestro. The lineage tradition of his disciples and sons progressed and along with that the number of tabla learners increased. They were further divided into some parts, which were called gharana. Every gharana has its own playing style which is called the Baaj . Tabla has the following Gharana based on playing style .

 

  • Delhi Gharana
  • Ajrada Gharana
  • Lucknow Gharana
  • Banaras Gharana
  • Farrukhabad Gharana
  • Punjab Gharana

 

These houses are divided under these two baaj , Western and Eastern. The playing style of the Delhi and Ajrada gharanas is called the Western baaj and the playing style of the Lucknow, Banaras and Farrukhabad houses is called the Eastern baaj. A brief introduction of these is given below

 

Delhi Gharana-

Delhi gharana – This is the first gharana of the tabla and it started in the UP by Siddhar Khan. His three sons – Bugra Khan, Ghasit Khan and Mehtab Khan and three main disciples – Roshan Khan, Kallu Khan and Tullan Khan carried forward the Delhi Gharana. The sons of Bugra Khan were Sitab Khan and Gulab Khan and his descendants were Nazar Ali.

Famous tabla players like Bade Kale Khan, Ali Bux, Ghulam Khan, Budhu Khan, Maqdoom Khan, Amir Hassan, Ahmed Jan Thirkuan Khan etc. have been in this house. Among the three sons of Mehtab Khan, Baxu Khan and Modu Khan established the Lucknow Gharana.

 

In the Delhi Gharana Chanti and Syahi Bolos are used more, hence it is called an Kinaar baaj . Two fingers are more used so this eagle is more soft than others. There is no use of big and strong paranas . Dhin gin, tir, tirkit, tarak etc. are used more frequently in this baaj.

 

Ajrada Gharana –

Sitab Khan of Delhi laid the foundation of this gharana by teaching tabla to Kallu Khan and Miru Khan brothers of Ajrada near mee rut . Chand Khan, Hasu Khan, Shammu Khan, Habib Uddin Khan etc. have been found in this Gharana. Kayede , Gatte of this house, the lyrics go on wavering. Like Delhi, long and strong paranas are not used here. Bols of chanti, syahi  and lava are  used more like Dhati, Dheena, Geena etc.

 

Lucknow Gharana –

The grand children of Siddhar Khan (Modu and Bakshu Khan) of Delhi Layed the foundation of Lucknow Gharana. In this gharanas , Shammu Khan, Muhammad Khan, Munne Khan, Wajid Hussain, Afaq Hussain, Biru Mishra, Jahangir Khan etc are famous tabla players . In this baaj , Kingang, Thun Thun, Dhilang, Tilang etc. were used more.

 

Farrukhabad Gharana –

Haji Vilayat Ali, son-in-law of Bakshu Khan, laid the foundation of this Gharana. There were other famous tablias of this house Nanhe Khan, Mishit Khan, Karamat Khan, Thirkua Khan, Prem Ballabh, Lal Ji Gokhale, Amir Hasan etc. The chales and gats of this house are famous.

 

Banaras Gharana –

Modu Khan of Lucknow Gharana taught tabla to Pandit Ram Sahai of Varanasi who laid the foundation of this Gharana. Pandit Bhairav ​​Sahay, Baldev Sahai, Durga Sahay, Kanthe Maharaj, Pt. Anokhe Lal, Bacha Mishra, Ishwar Lal etc. of this family carried this forward. Khula baaj , strong paranas laggi ladi are qualities of this gharanas .

 

Punjab Gharana –

This Gharana has developed independently. Hussain Bakhsh, Fakir Bakhsh, Karam Ilahi, Qadir Bakhsh, etc. have become famous tabla player  in this house. Allarakkha and his son Zakir Hussain are modern representatives. The rules, pieces, patterns and moves of this house are very long and rhythmic.
