Bharatanatyam Dance

  • Bharatanatyam is an Indian classical dance. Both male and female dancers perform this dance.

Origin and History

  • Bharata Natyam comes from the state of Tamil Nadu. The origins of the dance are recorded in Tamil literary texts dating back to the 6th century BCE.
  • It was revived in the late 18th century and again in the early 20th century.
  • Bharatanatyam is an Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. The name was invented in the twentieth century by the great dancer Rukmini Devi and others.
  • It is believed that this style was the original style described by the sage Bharata in a book on Natya, i.e. “The Dance of Bharata”.
  • The knowledge of the ancient dance was maintained by the caste of Devadasis, but as an oral and Terrisichorian tradition without writing. As such, there is little documentation of historical links between those dances and contemporary Bharatanatyam.

Organ

  • It has three main components:
  • Natya: In this part the artist tells the story through dance.
  • Nrit: Taals are used in this part.
  • Dance: It is a mixture of dance and drama.
