History Of Manipuri Dance In English

  • Manipuri dance is the main classical dance of India. It is named after its place of origin (Manipur).
  • This dance is mainly based on Hindu Vaishnava themes, in which the love affair of Radha and Krishna is prominent.

  • Manipuri dance is different from other dance forms of India. In this the body moves in slow motion, the arms flowing down to the fingers with symbolic grandeur and graceful movement.
  • This dance form developed with the Vaishnava sect in the 18th century, drawing from its early rituals and magical dance forms.
  • Themes from the works of Vishnu Purana, Bhagavata Purana and Gitagovinda are mainly used in it.
  • According to the legends of the Meitei tribe of Manipur, when God created the earth, it was like a single body. The seven Lanurahs danced on this newly formed hemisphere, pressing it gently with their feet to make it firm and smooth.
  • This is the origin of Meetai Jagoi. Till date when Manipuri people dance they do not step fast but keep their feet on the ground softly and softly.
  • The original myths and stories are still told as Maibi by the priests of Meetai or Maibis which are the root of Manipuri.
  • The female “Raas” dance is based on the theme of Radha-Krishna which is a form of ballet and solo dance. The male “sankirtan” dance is performed with full vigor to the beat of the Manipuri dholak.
