• Aashish Khan Debsharma is an Indian classical musician, sarod player. Apart from being an artist, composer and conductor, he is also an assistant professor of Indian classical music at the California Institute of the Arts and the University of California at Santa Cruz in the United States.
• As the grandson of Alauddin Khan, he collaborated with musicians such as Ravi Shankar and The Beatles. Apart from Indian classical music, he and his brother Pranesh Khan also composed disco music for the album Disco Jazz sung by Rupa Biswas.

Early Life –

• Khan was born in 1939 to a Bengali Muslim family in Maihar, a small state in British India, where his grandfather Alauddin Khan, the founder of the “Senia Maher Gharana” or “Senia Maher School” of Indian classical music, was a royal courtier. Was a musician.
• His mother was the first wife of late Zubaida Begum Ali Akbar Khan. He was taught Hindustani classical music by his grandfather at the age of five.
• Later his training continued under the guidance of his father Ali Akbar Khan and his aunt Annapurna Devi.

Career –

• Khan grew up performing Indian classical music in Maihar and Calcutta. He gave his first public performance at the age of 13 with his grandfather at the All India Radio “National Programme”, New Delhi and in the same year, performed at the “Tansen Sangeet Sammelan” with his father and grandfather.
• Khan is also the founder of the Indo-American musical group Shanti along with tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain in 1969 and later the fusion group “The Third Eye”.
• “Shanti” features Ashish Khan playing the acoustic sarod with vibrato effects sometimes through a Fender guitar amplifier.
• In the early 1980s, he and his brother Pranesh Khan took interest in disco music following the success of Pakistani pop singer Nazia Hassan. The brothers composed disco music for a project called Disco Jazz, the showpiece of which was “Today is Saturday”.
• While in Canada that year, he saw Rupa Biswas perform at the University of Calgary and approached her to provide vocals for the project. The album Disco Jazz was completed in 1981 and released in 1982.
• During 1989–1990, Khan served as composer and conductor for the National Orchestra of All India Radio, New Delhi, India.

Teaching-

• Khan is a music teacher, currently working as Assistant Professor of Indian Classical Music at the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, USA and as Assistant Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz, USA.
• He has previously taught on the faculties of Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California, the University of Alberta in Canada, and the University of Washington, Seattle.
• Pursuing a busy career as a musical artist and composer, he teaches students throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Africa, as well as in India. Many of his students have established themselves as stage artists in India and abroad.

• Khan has collaborated with diverse Western musicians such as John Barham, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Charles Lloyd, John Handy, Alice Coltrane, Emile Richards, Dallas Smith, Don Pope, George Strunz, Ardeshir Farah .
