Early life and background

  • Sonal Mansingh was born in Mumbai, the second of three children to Arvind and Poornima Pakwasa, a noted social worker from Gujarat and a 2004 Padma Bhushan winner.
  •  His paternal grandfather, Mangal Das Pakwasa, was a freedom fighter, and one of the first five governors of India.
  • She began learning Manipuri dance at the age of four, along with her elder sister, from a teacher in Nagpur, then at the age of seven she began learning Bharatanatyam from various gurus belonging to the Pandanallur school, including Kumar Jayakar in Bombay.
  • However, her real training in dance began when at the age of 18, despite opposition from her family, she joined Professor U.S. She went to Bangalore at the age of 18 to learn Bharatanatyam from Krishna Rao and Chandrabhaga Devi, Abhinaya from Mylapore Gowri Ammal, and later began learning Odissi from Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra in 1965.
  • Mansingh was married to Lalit Mansingh, a former Indian diplomat. The couple later decided to divorce.
  •  His father-in-law Mayadhar Mansingh introduced him to Kelucharan Mohapatra, where he trained in Odissi.

Career-

  • Sonal Mansingh’s dance career, which began after Arangetram in Mumbai in 1962, and in 1977, she founded the Center for Indian Classical Dance (CICD) in New Delhi.
  • Over the years, dance has taken her all over the world and won her the Padma Bhushan, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1987, and the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award, in 2003; She who got such honor after Balasaraswati
