Early Life –

• Ustad Sakhawat Hussain Khan or Sakhawat Hussain was a virtuoso Indian sarod player, a contemporary of Hafiz Ali Khan, and one of the leading exponents of the instrument in the 20th century.
• Sakhwat Hussain was a descendant of Bangash Pathans, who originally came from Afghanistan in the early 18th century to do military service in the Mughal court.
• He began his musical training under his father, Ustad Shafayet Khan, but became a formal follower of the Lucknow-Bulandshahr sarod gharana after marrying the daughter of renowned sarodiya Asadullah ‘Kaukab’ Khan.
• This tradition had its roots in Afghan Rubab playing and was strongly influenced by the Dhrupad singing style.

Career

• From 1926, he became Professor of Sarod at Bhatkhande Sangeet Sansthan after impressing Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande.
• He briefly played in the orchestra of Leela Sokhi (“Madame Menaka”), who founded the Menaka Indian Ballet Company.
• He toured Europe with Maneka in the period 1935-8 and gave many recitals.
• He was also responsible for identifying the talent of singer Begum Akhtar and encouraging her early training. He continued to teach at the Bhatkhande Institute until his death in 1955.
• Sakhawat Hussain’s 1920s recordings are among the very few that survive of sarodists from that period, and show a strong influence of tarana structure and a particular emphasis on right-hand technique, typical of players of the Lucknow-Bulandshahr gharana. which appears to be derived from rubab traditions.
