Desh raag is believed to have originated from Khamaj thaat. Both Nishad are used in this raag.Ga & Dha are not used in aaroh and all the seven swars are used in the avaroh. Its jati is Audav -Sampurn(5,6). In this raag Re & Pa are Vadi & Samvadi swar .The singing time of this raag is 9 pm to 12 am(the second part of the night).

Important Notes-

(1) Shudha Ni is used in its aaroh and komal Ni is used in its avaroh, like- Ma Pa Ni Sa*Re*Ni Dha Pa, Dha Ma Ga Re.

(2) It has been told under description of raag that Ga and Dha are prohibited in avaroh, but sometimes this rule is violated for the beauty of raag, that is, they are used in aroha also. While using Ga or Dha in aaroh, Meend and quick vowels are used, such as ReGaMa  Ga Re and PaDhaNi Dha Pa

(3) It is a raga of fickle nature. Therefore, mostly Chhota Khayal and Thumri are sung in it.

(4) Some people consider Pare to be a litigious conversationalist, but it is not right to believe so. The reason is that Desh is Purvanga Pradhan Raga, so its movement is more in the Purvanga of Saptak and its singing time is the second part of the night. This time comes in the eastern part of the day, so it is according to the raga-rules to consider its plaintive voice in the eastern part of the octave and the conversational form in the uttarang.
