Definition Of Nataraja Dance In English

Description

  • Nataraja is a name of Lord Shiva in the form in which he is the best dancer.
  • Nataraja is made up of two words – Nat (meaning art) and Raj. In this form, Shiva is the support of blacks. Shiva’s Tandav dance is famous.

Two forms of Shiva –

  • There are two forms of Shiva’s Tandav. The first is the symbol of his anger, the catastrophic Raudra Tandav and the second is Anand Tandav, the one who gives joy.
  • Shiva who performs Raudra Tandav is called Rudra, Shiva who performs Anand Tandav is called Nataraj.
  • The Nataraja form of Shiva is also attractive like his other forms and has many interpretations.
  • The famous ancient idol of Nataraja Shiva has four arms, surrounded by circles of fire.
  • With one of his feet, he has pressed a dwarf (Akshma), and the other foot is raised upwards in the dance posture.
  • He is holding Damru in his first right hand (which is raised upwards). The sound of Damru is the symbol of creation.
  • In this way, the creative power of Shiva is symbolized here. There is fire in his other hand raised upwards. Here fire is the symbol of destruction.
  • This means that Shiva creates with one hand and dissolves with the other hand. His other right hand is raised in the posture of abhaya (or blessing) which protects us from evils.
  • The raised leg is the symbol of salvation. His other left hand points towards his raised leg. This means that Shiva suggests the path to salvation. It also means that there is salvation only at the feet of Shiva.
  • The dwarf demon crushed under his feet is a symbol of ignorance which is destroyed by Shiva. Shiva destroys ignorance.
  • The flames rising all around are the symbol of this universe. The snakes waving from his body are the symbols of Kundalini Shakti.
  • His entire form looks like Om Car Swaroop. This indicates that Om is inherent in Shiva only.
