Early Life –
- Gandharva was born in a Kannada-speaking Lingayat family in Sulebhavi, near Belgaum, Karnataka, India. By the age of five, he was showing signs of musical talent and appeared on stage for the first time at the age of 10.
- When he was 11 years old, his father sent him to the famous classical teacher, B.R. Sent to Deodhar to learn music.
- His mastery of technique and musical knowledge was so sharp that Gandharva himself taught in school before the age of 20. At the age of 20, Gandharva was seen as a musical star and praised by critics.
Personal Life-
- Gandharva married Bhanumati Kansa in 1946. He B.R. He was enrolled as a student in Deodhar’s school, and Gandharva was appointed as his teacher.
- Both of them fell in love, got married and moved to Dewas in 1947. Soon after the move, Gandharva became ill with tuberculosis, but with the help of new medicines, dedicated doctors, and Pandora’s care, he recovered.
- Gandharva’s first son, Mukul Shivputra, was born in 1956. Their second son Yashovardhan was born in 1961 but Bhanumathi died during childbirth.
- Soon after his death, Gandharva married Vasundhara Shrikhande, one of his fellow students in Deodhar’s school. His daughter, Kalapini Komakalimath, is a famous singer.
Career –
- In his late 40s, he suffered from tuberculosis and doctors said he would never sing again.
- He was advised to move to the dry climate of Dewas, Madhya Pradesh for his health. For the next six years, Gandharva endured periods of illness and silence. Doctors told him that trying to sing could be fatal and that he had little hope of recovery.
- In 1952, streptomycin emerged as a treatment for tuberculosis and Gandharva started taking it. Gradually, with excellent medical help and the care of wife Pandora, he recovered and started singing again.
- His first concert after recovery was in 1953. The illness greatly affected Gandharva’s singing in his later years – he was known for powerful short phrases and his very high voice.
