Introduction
- Kinai is a tabla instrument made of wood, bullock skin and elephant skin. It is an ancient musical instrument.
- Also known as Tudi, it is an instrument of great military importance which is believed to have a clear and distinct sound.
Construction
- It is a double-headed drum which is played on the left side according to the count in Naldiyar. The kinai is designed in the shape of the footprints of a female elephant.
- The person playing this instrument was called Tudiyan or Kinaiyan, whose post was considered hereditary. The instrument is fastened with leather straps and has a karanai or a black spot.
Use
- It is specifically played for ‘vetchi’, a variant of the actual campaign, during which the cows of the enemies were captured.
