- Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the founder of Sikhism, and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Guru Nanak was born in Nankana Sahib in Punjab. It is now a part of Pakistan.
- His father’s name was Kalyan Chand Das Bedi who is commonly known as Mehta Kalu.
- His mother’s name was Mata Tripta. Both his parents were Hindu Khatris and Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in a Hindu Khatri landlord family.
- The last Guru said that there would be no other Guru after him and that Sikhs would be taught by the Sikh holy book, called the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The word “guru” means “teacher” in Sanskrit. They had two sons, Shri Chand and Lakshmi Das.
