Early life –
- Guru Kundan Lal Gangani, one of the leading exponents of the Jaipur Gharana of Kathak, was born in 1926 in Sujangarh, Churu district of Rajasthan.
- She was trained by her maternal uncle, the renowned Kathak guru Shri Narayan Prasad and made her first public performance at the age of 8 and again at the royal court of Raigarh at the age of eleven. After that, he spent about five years in Bihar.
Career
- Madhya Pradesh and several states and cities such as Khairagarh, Allahabad, Mumbai, Pune, Baroda, Kanpur and Jaipur, and continued his public presence in Jodhpur in the 1960s. After this, he specially attracted attention towards teaching.
- Guru Kundan Lal ji gave equal importance to Tandav and Lasya Anga in dance and due to this he also emphasized on acting.
- He lived and taught in many centers like Mumbai, Rajkot, Baroda, Jodhpur and Delhi.
- He introduced Gat to Vilambit lay and incorporated them into Paraná to create new and unique compositions.
- Guru Kundan Lal ji strongly believed in Kathak as a solo dance and always tried to build on the soloists. He was a brilliant tabla player.
- He also created many new dialects (Boliya), Tihaiya, Paran etc. and he performed Challan and Qaida in the form of Tatkar and rendered verses at the beginning of every Thumri.
- Many film actresses were disciples of Kundan Lal, including Swarnalata, Paro and Jabeen. In 1953, he was appointed the director of Kathak in the dance department of the University of Baroda.
