Introduction to Garba Dance

Garba

  • Garba is a famous folk dance of Gujarat. The name is from the Sanskrit garbha-dvipa.
  • It is mandatory to have at least two members for Garba dance. ‘Dandiya’ is used in this dance.
  • While dancing this dandiya is danced by bumping into you. Garba is one of the most famous dance of Gujarat.
  • Garba dance is performed all over the country during Navratri.

Introduction

  • Garba is a folk dance popular in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Malwa whose origin is Gujarat.
  • Nowadays it has got a place in modern dance form all over the country.
  • In this form, it has been refined to some extent, yet its element of folk dance remains intact.
  • In the beginning, this dance was performed in order to take the lamp to the hole near the goddess. Thus this ghat was called Deepgarbha.
  • This word has become Garba due to loss of alphabet. Now-a-days in Gujarat, during Navratras, girls decorate earthen pot with flower petals and dance around it.
  • Garba is considered a symbol of good luck and the Navratri of Ashwin month is celebrated as Garba dance festival.
  • Garba is established on the first night of Navratras. Then four lights are lit in it. Then they go around it clapping their hands.
  • In Garba dance, tali, chutki, khanjari, danda, manjira etc. are used to give rhythm and women in groups of two or four rotate in different ways and sing songs related to Goddess or Krishna Leela.

Modern Dance

  • Modern Garba/Dandiya is a dance form influenced by Raas which is traditionally performed by men and women.
  • The fusion of these two dances has resulted in the high energy dance that we are witnessing today.
  • Garba and Dandiya are generally performed by men and women dressed in colorful costumes.
  • Girls wear chaniya-choli and wear different types of ornaments along with it, and boys wear Gujarati Kedia and tie a turban on their head.
  • Garba dance is not only performed in the festival of Navratri but also on wedding festivals and other happy occasions.
