Introduction –

• The drum is a member of the percussion group of instruments. In the Hornbostel–Sachs classification system, it is a membranophone.
• Drums have at least one membrane, called a drumhead or drum skin, that extends over the shell to produce sound and is struck either directly by the player’s hands, or with a percussion mallet.
• There is usually a resonator head on the underside of the drum. Other techniques have been used to produce sound from the drum, such as the thumb roll.
