Early life –

  • Chandidas was a medieval poet of Bengal, or possibly more than one. More than 1250 poems related to the love of Radha and Krishna are found in medieval Bengali or Assamese with three different epithets of their names as well as Badu, Dwija and Dina without any epithets.
  • It is not clear whether these legends actually refer to the same person. It is believed by some modern scholars that the poems attributed to Chandidas are actually at least four different compositions of Chandidas, distinct from each other, which are found in variations.
  • It is also believed that the first of them was Ananta Badu Chandidas, who is more or less recognized as a historical figure, who was born in the Birbhum district of present-day West Bengal state in the 14th century and composed lyrical Sri Krishna kirtans (songs). ) were written.

Humanism

  • Chandidas was the first poet of Bengali language to be a humanist. He insisted “Shobar upare manush shoto tahr upore nai” (“Above all is humanity, no one else”). Later literature also often praises Chandidas’s love for Rajkini (a female washerwoman), whether this has any historical basis is not known.
