- Roy Chowdhury belongs to the Senia Bangash gharana of sarod playing, and has also been specially trained in the musical tradition of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana.
- Roy Choudhary was born on 12 January 1956 in Deoghar, Jharkhand state. He was given musical education by his father Mr. Ranjit Roy Chowdhury, a chemistry teacher by profession, but more importantly, he was a serious sarod player who trained under the late Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan and others.
- Biswajit Roy Chowdhury is married to actress Debashree Roy. The couple has two children, a son named Abir and a daughter named Anuradha.
Career –
- In 1978, Roy Chowdhury’s talent was noticed by Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and accepted him as a disciple. A turning point came in 1982 when Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor took interest in the discovery of young Roy Chowdhury.
- Roy Chowdhury’s patronage with Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor was formalized in a Gandha Bandhan ceremony in 1985.
- Intensive guidance and training continued until the Guru’s death in 1992. He is perhaps the only sarod player who plays compositions of the Jaipur-Atrauli tradition.
- Over the years Roy Choudhury has performed at various venues across India and is a regular participant in prestigious music events.
- He recorded the album “The Sarod Master” (1991) produced by guitarist John Larson for Hot Club Records.
- Biswajit Roy Chowdhury is an acclaimed artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan and has performed at the National Music Festival and Annual Radio Music Conference of these organizations. Roy Choudhary teaches sarod at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi.
