Alap In Music In English

Alap In Music In English

Extending the swaras of a raga in a delayed rhythm is called Aalap. Meend, Khatka, Murki, Gamak etc. are used in Aalap as per the requirement.

Aalap in singing is done in two ways,

In shape and with the help of words nom-tom tan de re yala yali etc. The first type is called aalaap of shape and the second one is called alaap of nom-tom. Aalap is mainly used in two places

(1) Before Geet or Gat and

(2) Between Geet or Gat

The chanting of nom-tom alap before the song or gat is divided into four parts –

Sthai –

Antara

Sanchari

Abhog

Geet or gat is started after the aalap and from this place the use of tabla also starts. The Alap in the middle of the song is small in size and is divided into several parts respectively. After each alap, the singer holds the song and the player joins the tabla by holding the gat.

Some singers do little alap before the song. He says that only that much alap should be done in the pre-expansion of the song, which is sufficient to clarify the raga. In the slow tempo of Aalap, the singer expresses his heartfelt feelings with the help of instruments like Kan, Meend, Khatka etc.

Alap is sung or played in ragas

8 Matra Alap

16 Matra Alap

For example, to sing 8 matra alap in Raga Yaman, the first half line of the sthai is sung or played , after that 8 matra alap is sung or played. And in 16 matra alap the first full line of the sthai is sung or played .
