Introduction
- Apang is a stringed musical instrument from Rajasthan. It is made of wood, metal, parchment, gourd shells, leather, goat skin, bamboo, and metal. It is believed to have been built by Saint Ismail Nath Jogi.
Construction
- A wooden shaft, at one end of which is fitted with a hollow metal cylindrical resonator. The resonator is open at the top and covered with skin at the bottom. An ancient musical instrument Bhapang is said to have been inspired by Damru, the instrument of Lord Shiva.
- This single-stringed percussion instrument is made of a hollowed-out shell of a dried pumpkin (tumbi), with the top and bottom shell cut off. The underside is covered with a flexible piece of leather such as goat skin.
- The center is punctured and a wire is passed through the piece of leather to the other end, where a handle (made of bamboo) is tied. Five small metal bells are attached to the handle.
- Bhang is played by placing it in the middle of the armpit. Its strings are controlled by the left hand of the player, who then plucks it with a plectrum with his right hand.
- Pulling and resting the string against the taut skin allows the sound and pitch of the instrument to be modified.

- Used by the Bhat community of Rajasthan while singing Marwari folk songs and by village charans and mendicants.
